Filing a Complaint
Surrey Police Service (SPS) police officers are governed by guidelines in the BC Police Act, as is the case with all municipal police agencies in BC. If you have concerns about the actions or conduct of an SPS police officer, the service provided by SPS, or the policies that guide SPS officers, you can file a complaint.
Generally, complaints must be made within one year of an incident and can be made directly to the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC), which is the independent oversight authority of the Police Act and the governing body for complaints regarding municipal police officers in British Columbia.
If you prefer, you can file your complaint with SPS and we will forward it to the OPCC.

Complainant Participation, Fairness and Transparency
Complaints submitted to SPS are assigned to our Professional Standards Section, which is an independent section within SPS that reports directly to the Chief Constable. The investigators and civilian professionals in our Professional Standards Section have undergone specialized training in cooperation with the OPCC. The training ensures professionalism and proficiency in all aspects of complaint-based and ordered investigations relating to the conduct of police officers under Part 11 of the Police Act.
Our investigators ensure that all complaints are handled with respect, compassion, and professionalism. They will provide information regarding all aspects of the complaint process and investigate and resolve complaints as fairly and inclusively as possible within the requirements of the Police Act.
We encourage all complainants to remain involved in their investigation, as this helps them understand the process, its expectations, and outcomes. Their cooperation also helps ensure a thorough and balanced investigation.
