Surrey Police Board Media Release

The Surrey Police Board has released a summary of what residents and businesses say are their top policing priorities — input that will directly shape the Surrey Police Service (SPS) 2026 Strategic Plan.

Through consultations held in 2021 and 2024, the community identified its top public safety concerns as violent crime (81%), organized crime and gangs (75%), intimate partner violence (70%), non-violent property crime (66%), and road safety (43%). Since then, Surrey has experienced a rise in extortion threats and targeted shootings, making these crimes a key focus for SPS in 2025.

“Residents have been clear — they want a police service that’s visible, engaged, and proactive in keeping Surrey safe,” said Harley Chappell, Chair of the Surrey Police Board. “The Board acts on behalf of Surrey residents and businesses, and we are listening to diverse voices from the community and ensure police initiatives align with their needs, values, and expectations.”

During the consultations, respondents told SPS and the Board that they want to see:

  • More visible officers building connections through community-based policing.
  • Stronger prevention and early intervention programs
  • Public education and transparency about SPS, in multiple languages.
  • Ongoing opportunities for public input into police priorities.
  • Collaborative programs developed with diverse community partners.

Residents also see Surrey’s new police service as a chance to “do policing differently” — with responsive, trauma-informed officers, and a supportive workplace culture that helps members stay healthy and engaged. Completing the police transition successfully remains a community priority, with the shared goal that everyone in Surrey is safe and feels safe.
The Board’s 2026 Strategic Plan will include clear performance targets and public reporting to ensure accountability and value for money.
